Hello!
 
My name is Mrs. Leticia Callela-Austin and I am so excited to be your child’s Music teacher. I am an El Sereno MS and Wilson Alumni. Outside of teaching, I enjoy spending time with my young boys and husband.
 
During the year, I will teach your children about the performance, analysis, and appreciation of Music. This is my 8th year teaching at El Sereno Middle School. Before my time at ESMS, I also had experience teaching English and Mariachi for four years at KIPP L.A. Prep and as a Violin and Mariachi teacher for seven years at Plaza de La Raza. I earned my Bachelor’s in Musical Arts from California Institute of the Arts. I received my Teacher Credential from CSU-Los Angeles and have just completed my Master's degree from CSU-Fullerton - Go Titans!
 
Throughout the year, it is important to have a strong parent-teacher relationship. If you have any questions or concerns, please contact me at any time. I am thrilled to be starting on this year’s journey with your children! I look forward to watching them learn, grow, and have a fantastic time performing music!

Mi nombre es Sra. Leticia Callela-Austin y estoy muy emocionada de ser la maestra de música de su hijo. Soy exalumno de El Sereno MS y Wilson. Además de enseñar, disfruto pasar tiempo con mis hijos pequeños y mi esposo.

Durante el año enseñaré a tus hijos sobre la interpretación, análisis y apreciación de la Música. Este es mi octavo año enseñando en la escuela secundaria El Sereno. Antes de mi tiempo en ESMS, también tuve experiencia enseñando inglés y mariachi durante cuatro años en KIPP L.A. Prep y como profesora de violín y mariachi durante siete años en Plaza de La Raza. Obtuve mi Licenciatura en Artes Musicales del Instituto de las Artes de California. Recibí mi credencial de maestro de CSU-Los Ángeles y acabo de completar mi maestría de CSU-Fullerton - ¡Go Titans!

Winter Concert on Wednesday!

Dear ESMS Music Students and Families:

Hello everyone!
 
Reminder that we our concert is THIS WEDNESDAY from 6-7PM and our students are expected on campus by 4:30 to tune up and run through the concert. If I did not receive any letter or phone call regarding your student missing, then your student is expected at ESMS this Wednesday for their final concert that will be graded!
 
We still need parent volunteers to help with concessions and just general help during the concert, so please reach out to Ms. Austin at 323-379-9480. The Music Booster Club will be present, so it would be great for them to have extra hands on deck to assist.

Recordatorio: nuestro concierto es ESTE MIÉRCOLES de 6 a 7 p. m. y se espera que nuestros estudiantes estén en el campus a las 4:30 p. m. para afinar y repasar el concierto. Si no recibí ninguna carta ni llamada telefónica sobre la ausencia de su estudiante, se espera que esté en ESMS este miércoles para su concierto final, que será calificado.

Winter Concert UPDATE

Urgent: Winter Concert Preparation – Immediate Attention Needed!

Dear ESMS Music Students and Parents/Guardians,

As we approach the Winter Concert on December 11, all students must take responsibility for their practice outside class. This is not optional—practice is essential for our success individually and as a group.

- Each student has an instrument assigned to them, and these instruments are available to check out for home practice. Students can also come during lunch to practice in the music room.

-2nd-year students are required to practice a minimum of 120 minutes (2 hours) per week.

- Next week, we will begin full rehearsals on stage with the complete concert set list, so students must come prepared.

As we get ready for Fall Break, I have prepped students and told them that their assignment over break is to take their instruments home to practice their concert repertoire. We are training muscles, ears, and minds—practice is critical to achieving a successful performance. Please talk to your child about the importance of self-motivation and how their effort contributes to the success of the entire group.

We need everyone to be fully committed as we prepare for the concert. I will be sending out more information on the concert day and attire next week.

Urgente: Preparación para el concierto de invierno: ¡se necesita atención inmediata!
Estimados estudiantes de música de ESMS y padres/tutores:
A medida que nos acercamos al Concierto de Invierno el 11 de diciembre, todos los estudiantes deben asumir la responsabilidad de su práctica fuera de clase. Esto no es opcional: la práctica es esencial para nuestro éxito individual y como grupo.
- Cada estudiante tiene un instrumento asignado y estos instrumentos están disponibles para practicar en casa. Los estudiantes también pueden venir durante el almuerzo para practicar en la sala de música.
-Los estudiantes de 2do año deben practicar un mínimo de 120 minutos (2 horas) por semana.

Update 10/25/24

Dear ESMS students and parents:

We’re excited to share that our chocolate sale has raised $1,230 toward our $4,000 goal! Thank you for your amazing support.

We have another shipment of chocolate arriving today, so more boxes will be available for those who want to participate. Please let Mrs. Austin know if you’re interested in continuing to sell or if you would like to start to sell. You can send the screenshot of the permission slip in an email to Mrs. Austin at [email protected] or via the Remind app.

Chocolate Sale

Dear ESMS Music students and families:

Our annual chocolate sale is starting soon! In preparation for the chocolate sales, the Music Department has begun speaking to your child about the sales and expectations.

Important details:

1. Each student would be responsible for a minimum sale of 1 box of chocolate.

2. The sale will be held from 10/21-11/1

3. Money collected will be used to purchase items such as competition entrance fees, 8th-grade medals, and music certificates.

4. Students are not allowed to sell DURING SCHOOL HOURS.

5. Each box is valued at $60. Once students turn in the permission slip and collect their box, they are responsible for these funds.

6. Money must be turned in to Ms. Austin to receive an additional box.

7. There will be a 3rd, 2nd, and Grand prize for the most chocolates sold! Awards will be announced soon.

Your student will receive their first box of chocolate next week. If every student sells one box, we can reach our goal of $4,000. Please help us support them by spreading the word about our fundraising efforts.

Concert on 5/30/24 @6PM

The time has come! We are 4 days away from our spring concert on May 30th 2024. As we're working steadily toward a strong end of the year, we're asking for the following to help our concert go smoothly. By now our students are pros with concert dress but if you need help, there is a link in the text that was sent and also on the school website if you look up my class page, you will see a link to a picture with examples of what is appropriate to wear. Remember formal wear: white top black bottom or all black or a white black mix. No sandals, no jeans or sweats! It is their last big performance for all of you so we want the students to look their best!

For the afternoon of the concert, we are asking that Orchestra students meet at 3:30 after school to rehearse with Period 4. At 4:30 we're asking the guitar students to meet to combine periods One and two to rehearse and at five Mariachi students are expected to arrive. We are staggering arrival times so that each group has time to rehearse on stage and know the routine of the show. If students know they cannot make it home to change, they will need to bring the clothes with them in the M building first thing in the morning. 

The concert itself starts at 6:00PM and it should only last one hour, finishing at 7:00PM. All students are expected to stay until the end of the concert to help clean up. Remember: the student concert is also considered their final so please speak to your child about the importance of attending and performing in this last big performance of the year.

¡Ha llegado el momento! Estamos a 4 días de nuestro concierto de primavera el 30 de mayo de 2024. Mientras trabajamos de manera constante para lograr un buen final de año, pedimos lo siguiente para ayudar a que nuestro concierto se desarrolle sin problemas. Ahora nuestros estudiantes son profesionales con vestimenta de concierto, pero si necesita ayuda, hay un enlace en el texto que se envió y también en el sitio web de la escuela, si busca la página de mi clase, verá un enlace a una imagen con ejemplos de lo que es apropiado usar. Recuerde la ropa formal: parte superior blanca, parte inferior negra o completamente negra o una combinación de blanco y negro. ¡Sin sandalias, sin jeans ni sudaderas! ¡Es su última gran actuación para todos ustedes, así que queremos que los estudiantes luzcan lo mejor posible!

Para la tarde del concierto, pedimos que los estudiantes de Orquesta se reúnan a las 3:30 después de clases para ensayar con el Periodo 4. Field Trip for 4/13/24

Hello students and families this is Mrs. Austin with some reminders about our trip tomorrow...

Quick reminders:

1. We are meeting at the M Building at 9 AM! Students are expected to be at ESMS to get instruments and stands to take over to the site. The gate between Farmdale and El Sereno will be open for us so make your way to M2!

2. Concert Black for your clothing! Remember we are representing our school, so let's show some Jaguar Pride!

3. The bus will leave at 10AM!

4.Once we are done, students will need to return all equipment to the bus and make sure it gets put away on ESMS campus.

5. Bus returns at 3:30PM

Mariachi Photos

Hello students and parents,
During our 5th period class, our mariachi students will be taking individual profile photos for their group shot for the yearbook. Students will NOT HAVE TO DRESS BEFORE COMING TO SCHOOL. Please ensure that the suits are pressed and drop them off before period 1 tomorrow in M2. Jackets and white shirt are the only items we need for the photos. We will only take photos during period 5 on Wed and Thursday - Wednesday for our Violins and Thursday for our Guitar, Bassists, and Trumpet.

Durante nuestra clase del quinto período, nuestros estudiantes de mariachi tomarán fotografías de perfil individuales para su fotografía grupal para el anuario. Dear Mariachi Los Jaguares students and parents,

Starting next Wednesday, February 21, 2024, our school will be hosting the second annual East Los Angeles Mariachi Workshops. These workshops were granted to us by a grant by the California Arts Council and the International Mariachi Women's Foundation. El Sereno will be hosting the student mariachi groups from Roosevelt HS, Mendez HS, Garfield HS, Wilson HS, Hollenbeck MS, and Griffith MS.

The workshops will be tailored around the music and style of mariachi and will be taught to our students for NO CHARGE. It is also a special treat as they will be taught by the legendary Mariachi Sol de Mexico and Mariachi Reyna de Los Angeles, L.A.'s first all-female mariachi!

All mariachi students are expected to attend as El Sereno is the host school. The classes will run from 2/21, 2/28, and 3/6 between the hours of 4:30-8:30PM. All students have received the music that will be taught in the workshops ahead of time, so they should be practicing at home in preparation for these master classes.
